Yoga Lessons that Improve Your Wake Surfing
Balance is seemingly a simple concept. As babies we learn to stand. As students we juggle study and play. And as adults we manage finances and a whole lot more. However in yoga, balance has many layers of depth and I’ve found this deeper understanding translates very well to our boards.
On the mat, balance begins with awareness in the body. You feel it in Chair Pose when you shift your weight into your heels relieving the pressure from your toes. This awareness in our feet is crucial as we learn to carve in the water. Both yoga & surfing teach us that balance isn't a fixed destination. Rather a constant negotiation, always adjusting, always finding your center again.
In the deeper levels of yogic balance we train the mind as much as the muscles. You feel it in Tree Pose when you steady your gaze and your whole body follows. This calmed focus gives your mind less external stimuli to process and sharpens our proprioception. Both yoga & surfing teach us to anchor our focus towards a desired result.
Finally we find balance though our steadied breath. Yoga and board sports start off very uncomfortable. As we practice we are literally training our brains to regulate and recalibrate under pressure. Our breath is the most reliable tool you have for steadying yourself when things get wobbly.
Balance isn't stillness. It's the art of moving through instability with awareness. Whether you're standing on one leg or riding a wave the practice is the same. Find your center, focus, and breathe.

This is why we created the Balance & Equanimity Weekend at Camp No Distractions.
Wake surfing and yoga on Lake Allatoona — because the mat and the board are teaching the same thing.
